Friday 09 May 2025 marked a landmark milestone in the ongoing DNA Research Project led by the Department of Agriculture, aimed at understanding the genetic and behavioral links to aggression in Pit Bull-type and other power breeds.
📍The first pit bull-type rescue DNA samples were officially collected at the Animal Anti-Cruelty League Johannesburg, with key stakeholders present:
✅ Department of Agriculture
✅ Agricultural Research Council – ARC
✅ Pit Bull Federation of South Africa – PBFSA
This milestone highlights the growing collaboration between government, scientific bodies, breed and welfare organizations committed to responsible dog ownership, scientific integrity, and the protection of both people and animals.
👏 We thank the AACL for opening their doors and participating in this important work. As more organizations join the initiative, we are one step closer to using science and data to inform fair policy, improve education, and promote ethical care and management of power breeds in South Africa.
Together, we’re shaping a safer, more informed future for dogs and communities alike. 💪🐶
