January is “Walk your Dog Month” and what better way to kick start your New Year than by getting out in the great outdoors and walking off some of that festive food and drink?

The number of pets with clinical obesity is increasing and not only do pets with obesity have a reduced quality of life and a shorter life expectancy, but obesity can result in secondary conditions such as arthritis, diabetes, high blood pressure, kidney disease and certain forms of cancer.

With obvious health benefits for both you and your dog, this awareness month is a great way to get out and about, meet other dog walkers and improve your own and your dog’s well-being.

We recommend before you start any exercise routine with your dog that you and your dog first get a health check.

Then it is 3 easy steps to kick start some good healthy fun:

Step 1: Pick a fun route to walk.

Step 2: Put on your takkies and a sturdy walking harness on your dog.

Step 3: Go out and enjoy!
