Animal Welfare Hospital
Hundreds of sick and injured animals are treated each week in our hospital by qualified and dedicated veterinary staff. Veterinary services are provided for pet owners requiring welfare assistance.
The AACL JHB has four permanent inspectors on its staff. Our inspectors under go thorough training in the administration of the Animals Protection Act, the Performing Animals Protection Act, animal husbandry and general first aid. Our inspectors are authorized by magistrates to enforce the law and to prosecute cruelty cases within municipal districts.
The AACL JHB provides shelter for many dogs and cats. Pets in our care are mostly strays and animals given up for adoption. We also have confiscated animals, which once signed over or released to ourselves, have new homes found for them.
All possible attempts are made to find suitable homes for the hundreds of dogs and cats in our care, awaiting adoption. Efforts are made to match potential new owners to a suitable new pet, as well as ensuring that the new homes are suitable for the pet’s requirements. Before any animal in our care is released to a new home, the prospective home is inspected to ensure that it meets with our adoption requirements.
Education & Information
Every opportunity is used to impart animal welfare advice and to emphasize through education, the importance of issues such as sterilization. Our Education Officer visits primary level schools daily, introducing learners to the work of the AACL and the services it provides.

Donate to our charity shop:
Instead of throwing ‘stuff’ out the next time you spring-clean, consider the AACL. If it is in good condition and re-saleable, we would love to have it. Clothing, bric a brac, linen, curtaining, ornaments, electrical appliances (working order), furniture, shoes, books, cutlery, crockery, etc, etc. For obvious reasons, we do not accept television sets, and because there is no re-sell value, we do not accept computer equipment. If unable to drop off your donation, please call our reception on (011) 435 0672 and we will do our best to collect when next in your area.
