Our Bredasdorp Branch

The picturesque farming area of Bredasdorp, has been home to this society since February 1989. With some dedicated committee members, volunteers and 2 Inspectors the society fulfils a very important and meaningful role in the community. The area covers Bredasdorp, Napier, Elim, Wolvengat, Struisbaai, Cape Agulhas, Arniston, Klipdale, Protem and surrounding rural areas. Due to the fact that the only veterinary practice in the area is situated in Bredasdorp, the inspectors travel great distances to get to animals in need. Animals that require treatment are taken to the veterinary hospital in Bredasdorp for diagnosis and treatment. Often animals are housed at the AACL Kennels to convalesce.

In a typical month, services rendered by the society can range from livestock issues being investigated, to collection and housing of stray companion animals, removing of bitches on heat and treatment of mange and various other conditions and injuries. Wildlife and marine life such as gannets and penguins are also dealt with on a regular basis. These are stabilized and then referred to specialized care facilities in the Cape Town area. Cases of cruelty and neglect are investigated and appropriate action taken. Animals are also adopted out to loving, new, forever homes – one of the many important tasks of the AACL Bredasdorp.

Welfare initiatives include dipping clinics in Bredasdorp, Napier and Arniston where animals are dipped and receive basic assistance with minor injuries and are de-wormed.  The Adopt-A-Spay Fund has been established to assist the community to sterilise their pets.  Owners are educated about the importance of responsible pet ownership and the importance of sterilisation.  Routine sterilisations are done by local private veterinary practice.  Mass sterilisation days are planned finances permitting where possible. Any donations towards sterilisation of animals would greatly assist us in our task.
