The Animal Anti-Cruelty League's Johannesburg Society was established in 1956.  Services to the community include the following.

jnb1

Animal Welfare Hospital

Hundreds of sick and injured animals are treated each week in our hospital by qualified and dedicated veterinary staff.  Veterinary services are provided for pet owners requiring welfare assistance.

jnb2

Inspectorate

The AACL JHB has three permanent inspectors on its staff.  Our inspectors under go thorough training in the administration of the Animals Protection Act, the Performing Animals Protection Act, animal husbandry and general first aid.  Our inspectors are authorized by magistrates to enforce the law and to prosecute cruelty cases within municipal districts.

jnb6

Shelters

The AACL JHB provides shelter for many dogs and cats.  Pets in our care are mostly strays and animals given up for adoption. We also have confiscated animals, which once signed over or released to ourselves, have new homes found for them.

jnb7

Adoptions

All possible attempts are made to find suitable homes for the hundreds of dogs and cats in our care, awaiting adoption.  Efforts are made to match potential new owners to a suitable new pet, as well as ensuring that the new homes are suitable for the pets requirements. Before any animal in our care is released to any home, the prospective home is inspected to ensure that it meets with our adoption requirements.

Education & Information

Every opportunity is used to impart animal welfare advice and to emphasize through education, the importance of issues such as sterilization.  Our Education Officer visits primary level schools daily, introducing learners to work of the AACL and the services it provides.

PLEASE NOTE:

Pursuant with a long standing agreement between the South African Veterinary Council and Animal Welfare Organisations, we do not treat private patients who do not qualify for welfare assistance. An Almonying system (Means Test) is in place and only those who pass this test will be treated at our Animal Welfare Hospitals.
